A Mini Split AC is a system that uses multiple indoor air handling units connected to a compressor unit outside. Each indoor air conditioning unit has a blower to deliver heated or cooled air to specific rooms. The system can also include a heat pump to offer heating in the winter.

The system is a great option for new construction or retrofits of older buildings that need heating and cooling systems. Since ductless mini-splits don’t need ductwork, energy losses associated with old, leaky duct systems are eliminated. They can also be easily zoned, allowing each room or space to be independently controlled which can minimize energy waste.

Another way that Mini Split AC can save energy is through variable speed compressor technology. Instead of turning on at full power, the compressor adjusts to run only at the precise speed needed to reach a desired temperature. This reduces energy consumption and keeps the house at a comfortable temperature without using excessive amounts of electricity.

Additionally, since they can be installed in spaces that do not have ducts, they can be used to provide air conditioning to areas that previously only had window air conditioners. Studies show that ductless air conditioners can use 19% to 32% less energy than window units (Pang et al, 2020).

Ductless mini-splits are a quiet solution, too. The noise level of the indoor air conditioning units is between 20 and 49 decibels, which is comparable to a library or a quiet suburb, according to manufacturers’ ratings. The outdoor unit is slightly louder, between 45 and 60 decibels, but that’s still below the average residential background noise.

Adding a ductless mini-split system can be a great upgrade for a period home, such as a Victorian or an early 1900s cottage. The installation is quick, unobtrusive and allows the home to retain its original features.

A ductless mini-split is a great choice for new construction as well as existing homes that need a heating and cooling system with the latest technology. It’s also a good alternative for buildings that are not suitable for a conventional central air system, such as an addition or converted insulated garage.
